This is the real day after tomorrow. No tidal waves, meteor or nuclear blasts, the world has crashed not with a scream but with a whimper. The failure of the national power grid turned the government into a shell, and anything left of government is now truly local...and truly chaos.
AMBER, 28, rules a small corner of this new reality. Her story is told to us by MATTHEW, 25, who is her confidante and Captain of her Guard. He tells us of Amber's former life as a super model, how she is desperate to hold onto her youth and her fading beauty. Her mind has twisted this desire into torturing young girls, who freeze to death before her throne. Matthew imagines Amber's wicked stepmother, and the childhood that made her so. Amber does truly have tons of charisma, and easily convinced the locals to follow her as she raids neighboring villages and carves up the spoils with her subjects, securing her hold on power.
The dysfunctional kingdom continues, and we join REGGIE, 55, a tired, worn out tombstone carver who has way too much work these days. He gives advice to his beautiful niece SYLVIE, 19, railing on Amber's rule, and the lack of resistance of the people against her absurd regime. Reggie dwells on the terrible times and all the missing and dead girls. Sylvie ponders the talk as she makes her way to a local gathering place, where she meets Matthew. He offers her wine, which he has drugged, and she awakes to find herself a captive servant for the Queen. Sylvie is taken before Amber, who rejects her as a personal servant. Later, as Sylvie scrubs a blood stained tub, Matthew confides in her, conspiring against Amber, who he considers a "sadistic, blood thirsty freak". Sylvie is stunned by Matthew's portrayal, but taken in all the same. He asks for Sylvie's help to overthrow Amber, and the two make a connection. Matthew later frees Sylvie, and they run off to Reggie's place. There Matthew tells Reggie horrible stories of Amber's evil deeds confirming what Reggie suspected all along, that Amber has lost her mind.
The next day, Amber's closest advisor, ANGEL, 24, comes for Matthew, who leaves without a fight or explanation. Sylvie is devastated. The conversation between Angel and Matthew indicates that Angel is blackmailing him, and is herself, lusting for Matthew. Reggie and Sylvie begin to take action against Amber. They destroy stock piles and create mistrust for Amber with the local population. Amber is furious that her power is in jeopardy due to a simple servant girl. She decides that she has to do away with Sylvie, the thorn in her side.
Not knowing of their relationship, Amber sends Matthew and a few other royal guards to capture Sylvie and her conspirators. Matthew has other plans and turns on the hunting party at the last minute, escaping with Sylvie. Back at Reggie's place Matthew explains that Angel has been blackmailing him for the last few years threatening to tell Amber that he was involved in a mysterious death of her trusted adviser and mystic Ransom. He explains the gruesome details of how Ransom killed herself with his gun and Angel thought he killed Ransom. The next morning Matthew and Sylvie make their way to Matthew's secret hideout in the forrest. They hold up in an old car and plan to take actions to bring Amber's reign to it's knees. Filled with passion, Matthew and Sylvie make love and it ends with Matthew giving Sylvie a poem tattoo on her back that proclaims his love for her.
Meanwhile, Amber wants Matthew back. She doesn't care how they do it or what it takes. She wants him back and she wants Sylvie's head on a plate. The royal bounty hunters track Matthew back to his campsite. Matthew hides Sylvie deep in the trunk and gives himself up thinking the bounty hunters will leave without Sylvie. Just as they are about to discover Sylvie, Reggie shows up and tries to save them. His old pistol misfires and he is overtaken by the bounty hunters who execute him without mercy. Seeing her beloved uncle gunned down Sylvie reveals her hiding place and is taken back to Amber.
By now Amber's world is crumbling around her. Neighboring counties are closing in, and the locals are organizing to overthrow her. She tries to convince Matthew to come back to her, but Matthew will not listen. He is locked up awaiting execution. Most of Amber's guards have headed for the hills to escape justice by the locals. One of Amber's chamber maids frees Matthew, telling him that Amber is torturing Sylvie and that Sylvie probably won't last much longer. Matthew heads into the palace and does away with the bounty hunters then heads off to kill Amber.
When he enters her boudoir he is instantly clubbed to the floor by Amber. He finds the strength to fight back and eventually gets the upper hand and chokes her with her pearl necklace until she passes out. Just then Angel bursts into the room and starts firing at Matthew hitting him in the leg as he dives behind the couch. Angel stands over Amber as Amber begs Angel to help her. Angel tells Amber that she had nothing to do with any of the killings, and that once Amber is out of the way she would be the next Queen. She stabs Amber in the chest and heads off to tell the local of the goings on and all the dead girls. Before she leaves she shoots Matthew one more time for good measure. As Angel makes her way down the road to find the locals, they come charging towards her
Before she has a chance to tell her side of the story the locals hang her in a tree. As they raise her up by the neck we get a glimpse of a tattoo on Angels back. The same tattoo that Matthew wrote on Sylvies back. Back at Amber's boudoir Sylvie bursts into to the room to find Amber hovering over Matthew trying to revive him. Amber is obviously stunned and not thinking clearly. Amber realizes that it's Sylvie and tries to stab her, but Sylvie fires into Amber. Amber tries to convince Sylvie that she had nothing to do with the killings that Matthew was a ruthless, sadistic killer and rapist. Amber tells Sylvie that she covered up for Matthew because as much as she hated it, she loved him.
Not wanting to hear more of Amber's lies, Sylvie shoots her dead. When Amber falls forward Sylvie notices something strange. She pulls Amber's shirt up to reveal a tattoo. The same poem that Matthew tattooed on her back. Just then she hears the sound of a gun clicking filling a chamber. Matthew, with his gun to her head, proceeds to tell Sylvie that he was just using her to help him overthrow Amber and he needed someone to get the local's against Amber. He tells her he made everything up about Amber and it was really all his doing. He fires his gun but there is no ammo. They both look at the gun laying on the floor next to Sylvie. The locals are pounding at the front door of the palace with a log battering ram.
We hear a single muffled shot. A moment later the doors bust off the hinges revealing Sylvie standing at the top of the stairs. We rush up the stairs, past Sylvie back to Amber's boudoir to find Matthew dead face down with a smoking wound. The smoke raises out of his back and spells out THE END.
Just then we hear a commotion outside the window only to find Sylvie is being strung up by the locals. We rush off into the sunset. Chaos has given way to Anarchy, as the pages of the collected works of Shakespeare blow in the wind. A small girl catches her reflection in a broken mirror, and smiles.
